Windsurfing Equipment: The Vela Baja windsurf center will be equipped with the latest in high performance gear featuring Neil Pryde sails and rigs, F2, JP-Australia, and HiFly boards. Neil Pryde sails include the V8, Diablo, Supersonic, RAF-Jet, and Wave. F2 boards range from the Wave 251, Air, Ride, and up to the Xantos 300. JP boards include the Wave, Freestyle, and Freemove boards. For beginners we feature the popular HiFly Revo. Please help us maintain the high quality of our fleet by handling with care.

Checking in to the windsurfing program: Our staff will be anticipating your arrival and will plan to greet you at the beachfront equipment check-out center. The location of the windsurfing program is easy to find at the Playa del Sol hotel. You can find our staff members at the equipment area wearing Vela T-shirts. Give any staff member your windsurfing voucher and they will set you up with an orientation to the sailing program, mountain bike use, snorkeling and other activities. All guests check in and out with the Vela "wall captain". If you want to change your board or rig during the day, please return the first board or sail to the rack and sign in with the wall captain.. Then sign out again, indicating your new board and/or rig choice. All these procedures will be explained to you during your orientation.

On-site Rental of equipment: If you have not paid for equipment as part of your vacation, on-site rentals of a limited selection of equipment will be US$70 per day, and will only be available after the staff is satisfied that all pre-paid guests have had their first choice. During busy times, non pre-book guests may not be able to rent gear. No half day rentals available, except for beginners. Beginner equipment rental is available for $20 per 1/2 day (morning) or $35 for the whole day. Complete board and rig rentals only. *All rates subject to change.

Adjustments to rig: Each sail has been rigged in a manner best suited for that sail. If you would like to make adjustments to the rig, we ask that you first get a short orientation to that particular sail from one of our staff.

Launching: You may launch at either the upwind or downwind point. Our beach ATV shuttles will carry your board to the launch area. If you need assistance carrying your rig, please ask a staff member.

Damage to equipment: You are responsible for any damage or loss of equipment. To minimize the possibility of damage, please choose equipment that suits your ability level and conditions, and handle equipment carefully when launching and coming in to shore. Be careful not to destroy fins by sailing too close to shore! Items that need replacing such as skegs, sails or mast will be charged at cost plus 10% for parts and labor. For items that can be repaired, standard charges will apply. This must be paid to Vela Baja in cash upon return of the damaged equipment. If you purchased insurance through Travelsure, you can claim any charges (less their $100 deductible) for equipment damage or loss with Travelsure upon your return.

Lessons: In addition to Windsurf Technique Seminars included in your vacation, you may also sign up for more in-depth private lessons or small group beginner lessons at an additional fee. All lessons are arranged and paid for on-site. Beginner, waterstart, and private lessons are all $55.00 for Vela guests.

Beginners: Two hours of instruction. Lessons given daily at 9:00am due to advanced conditions that generally follow in the afternoon. Beginner lessons will be available in the afternoon only when conditions permit.

Water Start Lessons: One and one half hour of instruction. After a short land session, the instructor joins you in deep water. Lesson times arranged on site.

Private lessons: The purpose of the private lesson option is to give you more individualized instruction. The private lesson can be catered to your specific needs whether that may be jibing, stance, footstraps, jumping, etc. Most private lessons run one and one half hours. Times arranged on-site and are subject to instructor availability.

Windsurf Seminars: These clinics are free for all pre-paid Vela guests and are given 5 days per week. Check the bulletin board at the equipment area for seminar times. The topics covered vary according to guests needs and may include any from the list below. Seminars typically run 30 minutes.

Vela Wind Warranty: In the event that there are 4 or more days of non sailable wind during the time in which you have paid for equipment, you may request a wind warranty form that will allow you credit towards a future trip to any Vela Windsurf Resort. In some cases you may receive higher credits if you return to the same center. You must be on a full Vela pre-book package for a minimum of 7 days to receive any no wind credit. You must get this form signed and authorized by the manager before you leave the Baja Center.
